About Basenjis

Basenjis are a unique and ancient breed of dog believed to be one of the oldest in existence. They were originally bred as hunting dogs, particularly for use in search expeditions in Africa. Basenjis have an incredible sense of smell and can track their targets for long distances.

The distinct physical features that make Basenjis stand out from other breeds include their smooth coat, wrinkled forehead, pointed ears, and curled tail.

Basenji’s are also known for being intelligent problem solvers; however, they can also be quite independent which means training them can take longer than with some other breeds.

History of Basenjis

Basenjis are a type of dog that has been around since ancient times. Originating in Africa, these dogs were used as hunting companions and were even depicted in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics as far back as 3500 B.C.E. The name “basenji” is derived from the African word “basengi,” which means “dog of the bush country” and refers to their natural habitat in the Congo region of Central Africa.

The breed was first brought to Europe by British explorers in the late 19th century where they immediately became popular for their alertness and intelligence. They have also become well-known for their unique vocalizations, which consist mainly of yodeling rather than barking.

Physical Characteristics

Basenjis are a breed of small-medium sized, short-haired dogs that originate from Africa. Their curious, alert and independent personalities make them popular as companion animals. Basenjis have distinctive physical characteristics that set them apart from other breeds.

The most recognisable feature of the Basenji is its curly tail which curls up over their backs like a corkscrew. Its compact body is muscular and athletic, with a deep chest and sloping back-end. The head of the Basenji is broad with erect ears and almond shaped eyes that give it an intelligent expression. Its coat comes in various colours including chestnut red, black and tan or tricolour (black/tan/white). They are also known for having no bark but instead making yodeling noises – some even say they sound like foxes!

Temperament & Personality

Basenjis are known for their independent and intelligent personalities. This breed of dog is considered to be one of the oldest domesticated breeds in the world. As such, they have a unique temperament that sets them apart from other canine breeds.

The Basenji is generally an aloof and independent-minded pooch, preferring to spend time alone or with its owner rather than socializing with other pets or people. It tends to express itself through vocalizations instead of barking, which makes it perfect for apartment living. They are also very smart and easily trainable if you can capture their interest in the task at hand. Despite their independence, they love attention from their owners and will show a lot of affection when given it!

Overall, Basenjis make fantastic pets due to their balanced combination of intelligence and independence.

Trainability & Exercise Needs

Basenjis are an intelligent, independent breed of dog that require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. They are known for their energy and trainability, making them an ideal choice for people who enjoy outdoor activities and teaching their dogs new tricks. This medium-sized breed is highly active, requiring owners to provide consistent exercise throughout the day to keep them in shape.

When it comes to training Basenjis, positive reinforcement is key. This clever breed can quickly become bored with repetitive tasks so it’s important to offer variety when teaching commands or other behaviours.
