Black and Tan Coonhound

Meet Winnie and Darcy two gorgeous Coonhounds, a dog breed native to the southern United States, used for hunting raccoons since the time of the Native American.

Winnie and Darcy were great fun to have in the studio and had all the traits of a Coonhound, counter surfing for the treats, a beautiful howl, and a nose that could sniff out the treats in my pocket.

What is a Coonhound?

A Coonhound is a type of hound that was originally bred in the United States for hunting raccoons. They are a versatile dog that is well-suited for hunting both big and small game but are especially good at hunting raccoons, not that we have any in the UK.
An excellent tracking dawg and are considered to be one of the best dogs for drug detection.

Coonhounds have a lifespan of 10 to 12 years, and are usually considered to be one of the most loyal and loving dogs. They have a sweet temperament and are usually easy to train and are also considered to be one of the most intelligent breeds of dog and are usually good with other family pets.

There are a number of Coonhound breeds, the most popular being the Black and Tan Coonhound, Bluetick Coonhound, Redbone Coonhound, Plott Hound, Treeing Walker Coonhound, English Coonhound and American Leopard Hound.

How big is the typical size for these dogs, and what kind of coat do they have?

The largest of the six coonhound breeds, Black and Tans range in weight from 34 to 45 Kilos.  Males stand 63 to 69 centimeters at the shoulder, females 58 to 63 centimeters.

A short, dense coat, black, with rich tan markings above the eyes, on the sides of the muzzle, and on the chest, legs, and back of the thighs.

Coonhound nature

A good-natured and easygoing dog but is in need of hard physical exercise so the perfect owner is one who will take them hunting, jogging or hiking.
Train a Coonhound well and make sure you are smarter, as a Coonhound’s nature to constantly figure out ways to outwit their prey will do the same with you. Basically, let a Coonhound off the lead and if they pick up a scent, it may be a while before you see him or her again, call all you like, but it is likely you are wasting your time. Their stubborn nature means as an owner, you need to be dedicated and willing to spend time with them.

Is a Coonhound a good family dog?

Coonhounds make excellent family pets because they interact with children of all ages and usually take all of the petting that is given out. However, no dog should be left unsupervised with children because children don’t always know how to treat a dog, and every dog has a limit.

There are many good reasons to choose a Coonhound as your new family pet! First and foremost, they are considered to be one of the most versatile dog breeds, capable of performing a wide variety of tasks. They make great hunting companions, and are also great family dogs. They are friendly and easy to train, and are known for being very loyal to their owners.

Winnie and Darcey looked so adorable with their long ears and they had great fun investigating every nook and cranny in the studio, after all they really do have an inquisitive personality.  Drooling was an issue and boy did I have some work to do to remove the slobber from the ears and around the mouth, but hey that is the joys of being a dog photographer.
